Dr. Jason Karlawish, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, co-principal investigator for PennAITech, and an expert in bioethics and neurosciences, recently moderated a 2023 a2 National Symposium panel discussion on the ethical implications of using artificial intelligence (AI) in Alzheimer's and neurodegenerative disease research. The panelists included Dr. Emily Largent, who focuses on ethical and regulatory issues in Alzheimer’s research; Dr. Irene Chen, an authority on machine learning for equitable healthcare; and Dr. Debra Mathews, whose work encompasses ethics and emerging technologies. The discussion examined the role of AI in clinical care, challenges in algorithmic bias, and the ethical considerations that arise from integrating AI into healthcare, specifically targeting neurodegenerative diseases. The panel underscored the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to address these complex ethical issues effectively.
